I’ve been leaning towards getting a shotgun for home defense and could use some input. I’m debating between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I hear the 12-gauge has more stopping power, but the 20-gauge might be easier to manage in tight spaces since it kicks less. What are your thoughts?

I’m also trying to figure out the best barrel length and stock setup for home defense. Anything specific I should look for?

As for brands or models, I'm after something reliable and straightforward. Any recommendations?

Lastly, how crucial is training? I have some shotgun experience, but nothing too serious. What kind of practice should I focus on to feel ready?

Go with a 12-gauge Mossberg 500 with an 18.5-inch barrel. It is reliable, has tons of aftermarket parts, and low-recoil buckshot like Federal FliteControl patterns tight at 15 yards. Train with dry-fire drills to practice clearing corners in your house. A light like a Streamlight TLR-1 is a must for night use.

Have you thought about whether managing recoil or maximizing stopping power is more important for your home defense setup?
