I'll tell you exactly what it is because I built it up in my head to be something it isn't. You put the gun unloaded in a hard case, you lock it, you walk up to the ticket counter and you declare it and it goes in checked baggage. That's the whole thing.

The first time I did it I prepared like I was about to submit a legal brief. I had printed documents. I had rehearsed what I was going to say. The agent checked the lock, slapped a tag on the bag and moved on in under two minutes without even blinking.

The process is administrative, not adversarial. So do the research, follow the rules and then just go catch your flight.

That’s exactly it, people overthink it way more than they need to. Once you’ve done it once, you realize it’s just a routine counter process and nothing dramatic

The first time I declared something at the counter, I was sweating like I’d done something wrong. The agent barely glanced up and the whole process took ninety seconds. I built it up way more than I needed to.
