I’m gearing up for my first moose hunt in Vermont and wanted to share some thoughts and get advice from those who have experience in the area since there’s a lot to consider, especially given Vermont’s terrain and weather.

Right now, I’m focused on:
  • Mapping out likely moose areas
  • Checking local regulations and permits
  • Preparing gear for cold and wet conditions
  • Practicing with my rifle and optics
If you’ve hunted moose in Vermont, I’d love to hear tips on the best times, strategies, and anything you wish you knew before your hunt

Layer up, keep your boots dry and glass near swamps at first light. Moose move slow but show up when you least expect it. Vermont will test your patience and your knees

Watch the weather and scout logging cuts...early mornings after a cold snap are gold. Bring a good call and a tarp, you’ll need both.

You should get deep where the roads end. Moose don’t hang by crowds. Bring a sturdy frame pack, a buddy, and a good plan for packing out meat..

You’re dead right, man. Vermont’s bogs’ll humble anyone not ready for soggy socks. Patience is your best ammo out there.

Cold snaps really wake the woods up. Nothing like hearing that bull grunt back through the mist… chills every time.

Couldn’t agree more, the real hunt starts after the shot. Packing moose quarters uphill will make you rethink gym day real quick.
